efore you ask your animal to understanding you, learn to understand your animal.
It’s really that simple. Animals are MUCH better communicators than we are. They are black and white. They don’t sugar coat. They don’t say what they don’t mean. They don’t say one thing and do another. There is not inconsistency to their communication.
Maybe that’s why humans don’t understand them, humans complicate things, it’s in our nature. Our communication is much more complex. We often humanize animals in their communication with us. Examples of this are:
- My dog peed on the floor because he’s mad at me.
No he most certainly did not, he peed on the floor to tell you something but it’s not because hes mad at you.
- My cat is a jerk because he bites me.
No your cat is most certainly not a jerk, your cat has been trying to tell you something but you didn’t listen so now he’s really trying to get your attention.
There is no animal that is a jerk. That’s a human trait.
- My dog keeps doing things he shouldn’t be doing.
No, animals don’t do things they know disappoints their guardians. Your dog doesnt know or he wouldnt be doing it. You’re communication isn’t clear and you dont understand his.
- My pet looks guilty when I walk in and she’s made a mess. She knows it was wrong.
No she doesn’t. She is reacting to YOUR reaction, YOUR energy, and YOUR emotion. She is worried and trying to show you she is not a threat even though she doesn’t know WHY you are angry. She is trying to show you she is pure love and submissiveness. Your animal should NEVER feel worried about your reaction or energy. Animals don’t feel guilt. That’s a human emotion.
Animals don’t feel guilt, anger, or hold grudges. They aren’t vindictive or mean. When you think your animal is showing any of those traits, they aren’t. You are humanizing them. Your animal is simply reading the energy in the room and reacting in a way that keeps them safe.
Your animal should never fear or worry when they are around you (based on your energy). They should always know you are safe. You are peaceful. You are HAPPY to see them and shows you they are NOT challenging you.
Animals are simple. Humans are complicated.
Animals communicate clearly. Humans communicate inconsistently and confusingly.
