If your pet brings you something – anything, thank them.
It could be a toy, a kill, a stick, a bone, even your shoe! Whatever it is, it is their way of gifting you something to show their love.
So many pets get “in trouble” for bringing a sock or a shoe or an item belonging to a human. Trust me there is not a more flattering gift. It has your scent. Your animal is showing you how special you are. And bringing you something that is YOURS! To be helpful and to show love.
And then there are the times when animals bring something gross, a kill, something stinky they found outside. Again, so flattering! Animals love stinky things… I can promise your pet was SO excited when they found that stinky thing, or killed that mouse. And they want to share their excitement with you!
Imagine your most favorite thing in the world… you would only share it with the ones you trust and love the most. That is exactly what animals are doing when they bring you something. It is an honor. Treat it as such. Thank them. Be excited with them. Appreciate their gift, even if it isn’t “ideal”. I can promise you it is “ideal” to them and we don’t want to hurt their feelings.
