Preferred Phrases

When I talk with the animals they often share preferred phrases with me. When they do, I make a commitment to use these terms.

Recently, pets have used the word “transition” instead of “euthanasia”, “dying”, and even “passed”.

I often ask them why. With this the general consensus is because they are not moving on in any way, they are transitioning into a different form, still as actively involved in their guardians’ lives.

If you think about the definition of even the word “passed” it means “leaving behind”. They never ever leave us, so “passed” is not a fitting term for animals or humans! Transition fits much better.

It is also important to remember we don’t “own” our pets. We are their “Guardian”. It is our job to protect them, to take care of them, to love them, to make sure they are happy, healthy and safe. Always refer to yourself as your pet’s “guardian”, never as their owner. It will create a better realtionship wtih your pet.

I like to share these preferred phrases with you, so you can all use them with your animals.
