Bringing in a Young Animal with A Senior Animal In the House

Many animals loves companionship of other animals and when they spend years together, they get attached. So the loss of one can greatly affect the other. Especially if they have spent their entire lives together.

Pets will grieve this loss, hard. And they may be lonely, sad, and get depressed.

Many humans want to bring in a younger friend or a puppy/kitten for the seniors companionship. At times, in single animal homes, humans want to bring the new baby in before the senior transitions so they are not a pet free home.

How does this affect the seniors? Well, it depends on the animal.

Some will nurture the baby, help train it, and enjoy the companionship. Others will be jealous, tired, frustrated and upset. Babies are a lot. High energy, require lots of attention and time, and test patience.

Things to consider if you are considering bringing in a young/baby pet while having a senior.

* How patient is your senior? Remember even the most patient one has a tolerance level.

* How well (physically) is your senior? A physically challenged senior will not appreciate a young, rowdy baby.

* Do you really want to do this for you? Or for your pet? If it is for you, wait. Be honest with yourself about the answer to this.

* Give your pet enough time without another pet, depression, sadness is normal. Dont rush into a decision because of these emotions. The emotions will pass in your pet, like they pass in humans, but that takes time.

* Heavily onsider an older, middle aged pet. The energy level may be better suited to your senior.

* Will having a baby/young pet take time away from your Senior. Seniors need more time and care. The senior will notice start to hide its ailments and discomfort because you lack time.

There is no right or wrong answer at all. You have to know your pet. You have to match your pet with the right energy. Just because a senior is patient it doesn’t mean any animal will fit.

Animals are all loving beings. They will try their best to accept any animal you bring into the home because they want to please you. So just make sure to give your senior time and consideration. Some will thrive with a younger pet, it will give them life and energy and fun! Some will not enjoy it at all and they will hide their needs. Consider everything, so everyone can be happy.

Or you can always ask during a session with me. This is a common question during sessions. “Do you want a friend?” – “If so, what qualities do you want your friend to have?” Or “how would you describe your perfect animal friend?”
