Time With Your Pet

So many guardians feel guilty about not spending enough time with their pets.

Yes our pets love the time they get with us. They want as much as they can get. They’d spend every minute with us if they could…. Ok well most of them would:)

But they also are the most understanding loyal and selfless beings that exist. If you are busy – gone a lot – take the time to acknowledge your dog when you leave and when you return – even if you only run into the house for 3 minutes.

If you have work to do at home, sit with your pet and do it. Talk to your pet while you clean. Make ten 2 minute connections with your pet if that’s all you have.

Sometimes 10 connections seem like more time to a pet than one 30 minute connection because of frequency.

Gifts From Your Pet

If your pet brings you something – anything, thank them.

It could be a toy, a kill, a stick, a bone, even your shoe! Whatever it is, it is their way of gifting you something to show their love.

So many pets get “in trouble” for bringing a sock or a shoe or an item belonging to a human. Trust me there is not a more flattering gift. It has your scent. Your animal is showing you how special you are. And bringing you something that is YOURS! To be helpful and to show love.

What Name Will You Choose?

Names carry energy. When naming or renaming your pet think about what type of energy you want your pet to have! Remember… you are the one that has to live with it….

Silly names will tend to yield a pet that is funny, goofy, maybe a bit mischievous.

A confident name will tend to yield a pet that is slightly dominant, a leader, bossy.

A cuddly name will yield a pet that is loving and gentle.

These names can help, but personalities are of course stronger than any name.

Are You Hurting Your Pet’s Feelings?

There are a few things humans do that unintentionally hurt their animals feelings. I will post about these over the next week or two.

The first is teasing – I see a lot of clips on IG of animals being teased… now some of it is funny! The cheese test (as long as you give your pet the cheese after). But most of it just confuses animals. They don’t understand teasing like humans do and they take everything literally.

They think you are laughing AT them. This hurts their feelings.

They think they are in trouble or a disappointment.

They think they’ve done something wrong.

They wonder why their guardian wants to “annoy” them.

Most importantly, teasing affects your relationship with your pet. It scars the trust. Animals are all forgiving beings so yes they get over it but in that moment they are hurting, they are sad, they are confused.

Do Our Animals Understand When We Talk To Them?

Yes, they do! What they do not understand is when we are joking.

Animals that are talked to often with words of praise are happier and oftentimes, can act a bit spoiled (lol). They are always being told they are special or loved so they feel that way.

Animals in not great situations that are scolded or told they are “stupid” even as a joke, are not as happy and start to have self-confidence issues. They become nervous and anxious.

The words you use when you engage with your pet affect your relationship with them and how they view themselves.

Let’s Talk Nicknames!

We all have nicknames for our dogs. Usually many. Most of the time these nicknames are completely different from their given names.

Names carry energy, just like all words.

The wrong nickname can make your pet feel very bad.

When you are using nicknames please sure sure the nickname has good energy. Make sure it is positive. Otherwise, your pets self esteem will suffer and your pet may develop nuisance behaviors as an effect. Your pet’s energy will be affected by any name you use to address your pet.

Mental Health For Pets

Animals mental health is AS IMPORTANT as their physical health.

When pets display undesirable behaviors a lot of guardians look for physical issues or ailments to explain the behaviors. Especially when those behaviors came with sudden onset.

Looking for physical “reasons” is very important and should always be done. But guardians should also look for mental health reasons.

Is your pet trying to tell you something with its behavior? Most certainly.

Your pet can be alterting you to a physical or mental health issue.

A vet can of course with physical health. But you, or a communicator are what is needed for mental health.

What Do Our Pets Think When We Take A Vacation?

Animals live in the moment. At the moment we leave, whether for a minute, an hour, a day, or a week, they want to go with us.

Once we are gone, they are again living in the moment, happy, relaxed, and no longer “sad” about us leaving without them.

Whether gone a minute, an hour, a day, or a week, our return excites them! To them, a minute, an hour, a week, etc is all the same.

Litterboxes

Your cats smell is 100 times better than the human nose.

Many guardians complain about cats not using the Litterbox and can’t understand why.

Though there are SO many reasons your cat may choose to stop using hte litter box, one of the most common is the smell.

You may not be able to smell the box, but they can, especially when they are so close to it, and especially when they are digging in it.

How Do You View Mistakes?

Your thoughts can alter your relationship with your pet. You can become a trusted teammate that your pet can depend on. Or you can create a relationship with uncertainties.

My dogs are SO clean. They never have accidents in the house. However a few weeks ago I came home to pee on the floor. When we come home to a watery poop we know they probably could not hold it. But to come home to pee never ever happens (in years). It hadn’t been long since they had been out so it was odd.
